Pet Food For Thought

Old Fashion Kibble Vs. Revolutionary Freeze Dried Diet

Pet food is evolving before our pets eyes. The once standard highly heat processed dry kibble is now being replaced by a revolutionary diet called “Freeze Dried”. Named after the technology that’s used to remove moisture but maintain nutrients, this technology has forever advanced nutrition for pets. While freeze drying is fairly new, developing over the last ten years, it’s here to stay. We have listed the advantages of both to give you the pet guardian some insight into which may be better for your companion.

Advantages of Freeze Dried
  • Less Grain- Research has shown that high grain diets can contribute to bladder stones and other health problems. Freeze Dried food manufacturers feel that less grain is better since these sources are not found in the wild by carnivores. Grains have become an inexpensive means of providing fiber and some proteins in kibble and therefore are added as primary ingredients.
  • Bioavailability- This definition of this word means how “available’ are the nutrients to your pet once digested. If nutrients are cooked or altered they cannot be absorbed or utilized properly. Experts believe the whole food sources found in Freeze Dried diets are the most complete, bioavailable, sources and should be considered first.
  • Superior Health Advantages- Research has shown that Freeze Dried foods help reduce or eliminate several major life threatening conditions such as Bloat. The science suggests that the whole food sources in Freeze Dried diets do not exhaust the digestive enzymes and cause digestive distress commonly associated with dry kibble. Natural vets also suggest that these diets produce far fewer allergies, ear infections, digestive problems and illness when compared to pets fed primarily kibble diets.

Advantages of Dry Kibble

  • Convenient- Kibble is available at all supermarkets, pet stores and online whereas Freeze Dried foods are available primarily at specialty stores and health oriented websites.
  • Affordable- Kibble tends to costs about $1 per pound. Freeze Dried foods costs more but do so because you’re not paying for the moisture content or water which constitutes a great deal of pet food weight. Many people combine the two diets by feeding kibble in the morning and Freeze Dried diets at night
  • Familiar- People often purchase what they are familiar with. Therefore many choose kibble as safe choice for them.

Note: When selecting a Freeze Dried diet, select one with meats, vegetables and supplements or other whole food sources included. This ensures a complete and balanced diet.
